I am writing today to strongly urge you to oppose the American Clean Energy and Security Act.  This damaging legislation would raise energy prices, cost American jobs, and result in the single-highest tax increase in American history.  Even in the best economic times, we should be on guard against reckless fiscal policies.

While I agree that climate change is an issue that needs addressing, we do not need legislation that would further jeopardize our economic recovery.  Increasing the cost of energy and other goods - especially at a time when so many Americans are struggling to make ends meet - is simply too drastic of an approach.  Furthermore, as the cost of domestic energy skyrockets, our country will come to be even more dependent on foreign sources of oil and natural gas at a time when we should be increasing our energy security.

I also worry that this legislation will cause a ripple effect that will be felt by all Americans, but most dramatically by lower-income Americans.  The immediate effect of this bill will be higher energy costs at a time when we are all tightening our belts to weather this severe recession.  However, this is just the beginning.  As corporations are faced with the tax increases that Cap and Trade would impose, everyone can also expect a general surge in the prices of goods and services.  This means not only will I be forced to pay more in energy costs, but I will also have to contend with higher prices at every turn - at my neighborhood restaurant, at the grocery check-out line, and while buying back-to-school clothes for my children.  Inevitably, these higher prices will make families cut down spending even further, resulting in less money going into our economy, and severely hurting our chances for economic recovery.

Job loss is another problematic consequence of the so-called American Clean Energy and Security Act.  With our nation's unemployment rate on the rise, we should be doing everything we can to create new jobs and protect the jobs we currently have.  But a recent study found that unemployment will increase by nearly 2 million in 2012, when this program is slated to begin, and would reach 2.5 million in the years to come.  Many businesses will be forced to choose between laying-off workers, going out of business entirely, or outsourcing American jobs to nations like India or China, where it is significantly cheaper to do business.

Any way you look at it, the American Clean Energy and Security Act is troublesome for America's workers and businesses alike.  What's worse, it won't work.  As long as nations like China and India refuse to limit their emissions, all Cap and Trade will really do is prolong America's economic crisis, while other nations surge ahead in the global economy and continue to pollute our environment.  This legislation tilts the playing field in their favor.

Once more, I strongly urge you to oppose the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which would result in higher taxes, increased energy costs, and an inflated unemployment rate.  Americans deserve real solutions, not economically devastating legislation that won't achieve meaningful change.
